In the late evening of 27 February (early 28 February local time in Iran), Israel and the United States initiated a coordinated large-scale air campaign against Iranian strategic targets. Israel codenamed the operation “Roaring Lion”, while the United States conducted parallel strikes under the designation “Operation Epic Fury”.
The operation targeted Iranian nuclear facilities, ballistic missile infrastructure, military command centres, and senior leadership locations across Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, Kermanshah and Bushehr. Iranian state-affiliated media subsequently reported the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior official Ali Shamkhani, alongside significant military leadership casualties.
Civilians, travellers, and business interests affected in air campaign against Iran
The offensive prompted immediate and widespread Iranian retaliation through drone and ballistic missile attacks directed at Israel, US military installations, and allied states across the Middle East, affecting civilians, travellers, and business interests.
Within 72 hours, the confrontation expanded into a multi-theatre regional crisis involving Gulf states, Iraq, Lebanon and the Eastern Mediterranean. Missile interceptions and falling debris caused civilian casualties and infrastructure disruption in several countries.
Maritime instability in the Strait of Hormuz generated volatility in global energy markets. Hezbollah entered the conflict from Lebanon, opening a secondary front against Israel.
Diplomatic tensions intensified across the Gulf, while the United States confirmed combat casualties and signaled that operations may continue for several weeks. The absence of a ceasefire mechanism and ongoing retaliatory strikes indicate sustained escalation risk.
